The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has launched a seven-day warning strike in response to the abduction of their colleague, Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, who has been held captive by kidnappers for eight months.
The strike, which began at midnight on Monday, August 26, 2024, is total and comprehensive, according to NARD. There will be no concessions or emergency care during this period.
“The strike is total, and there will be no concessions or emergency care during this period,” said NARD.
NARD also directed all federal and state healthcare centers to ensure full compliance, emphasizing that proper handover of patients to consultants should be completed.
Any center that fails to comply with NARD’s directive will face heavy fines and be barred from participating in the forthcoming NARD AGM.
Dr. Popoola, a registrar in the Department of Ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre, Kaduna, was abducted on December 27, 2023, along with her husband and nephew. While her husband was released in March, Dr. Popoola and her nephew remain in captivity.
NARD members had previously staged protests at tertiary hospitals nationwide, demanding the release of Dr. Popoola.
