The Court of Appeal in Abuja has ordered former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, to surrender himself for trial in a case where he is accused of laundering N80 billion.
This decision came after the court rejected his appeals to stop the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from prosecuting him.
The EFCC has charged Bello with 19 counts of money laundering, accusing him of diverting N80 billion from Kogi State’s funds.
However, Bello has avoided appearing in court for his arraignment, missing six scheduled sessions.
The Appeal Court’s decision reinforces the power of the EFCC to prosecute Bello, dismissing his legal attempts to halt the trial.
The court also ruled that Bello must present himself for arraignment before any of his other legal applications can be considered.
Bello had previously cited a Kogi State High Court ruling in his favor as a reason for avoiding court.
However, the Appeal Court criticized this ruling, stating that no court can prevent law enforcement agencies from carrying out their duties.
The EFCC has faced difficulties in arresting Bello, with reports suggesting he managed to escape with the help of his successor, Governor Usman Ododo.
The agency has now declared Bello wanted.
