Former Ajax winger, Finidi George, has resigned as coach of the Super Eagles.
This announcement was made by former Super Eagles media officer Toyin Ibitoye in a post on X.com on Saturday.
“News just in. Finidi George #FinidiGeorge_FG has resigned from his #NGSuperEagles manager position,” Ibitoye wrote.
George’s resignation comes after the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) decided to appoint a foreign coach to oversee him, despite his recent appointment in May.
The 53-year-old had taken over after Jose Peseiro’s contract ended in February, having served as his assistant for 20 months.
The Super Eagles’ poor performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin led to George’s demotion.
Consequently, his one-year contract would have been downgraded, with his monthly salary reduced from N15 million to N5 million.
Additionally, his assistants would be replaced by the new foreign coach’s staff.
In a meeting with Sports Minister John Enoh, George expressed frustration over the lack of support from the NFF and questioned the commitment of Nigeria’s top players during the crucial World Cup qualifiers.
