Comrade Alhassan Yahya from Gombe State has been elected as the new President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
The election took place on Wednesday night during the 8th Triennial National Delegates Conference in Owerri, the Imo State capital. Yahya, who previously served as the union’s National Deputy President, secured a decisive victory over his closest rival, the incumbent Treasurer, Dele Atunbi.
Yahya garnered an overwhelming 436 votes, while Atunbi and another contender, Mohammed Garba, trailed with 97 and 39 votes, respectively.
In other positions: Comrade Abimbola Oyetunde, a Deputy Director with Radio Nigeria, emerged as the Deputy National President unopposed, Comrade Ronke Afebioye Samo from Ekiti State Council retained her position as Vice President for Zone B without contest and Comrade Victor Ndukwe, the National Treasurer and former Chairman of Abia State Council, was also re-elected unopposed.
The election, held under tight security, was overseen by the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Comrade Mike Ikeogwu, and presided over by a representative of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero.
Before his election as NUJ President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya had served as the Gombe State Council Chairman of the union, bringing years of leadership experience to his new role.
