A High Court in Asaba, the capital of Delta State, has handed down a death sentence to Onuwa Ijie and 14 years imprisonment to Nwanozie Uzor for the murder and conspiracy to commit murder of twin boys, Chidalu and Chigozie Agwunobi.
Presided over by Justice Onome Marshal-Umukoro, the court convicted the two men for the brutal killing of the seven-year-old twins.
The prosecution, led by Deputy Director in the Ministry of Justice, Mrs. Paula Akpoguma, presented five witnesses whose testimonies convincingly established the guilt of the defendants beyond reasonable doubt.
According to Akpoguma, the tragic incident occurred on March 5, 2020, in Oko-Ogbele Community, where the defendants lured the twins into a bush, mutilated them by severing their penis, eyes, tongues, and hands, which were then swiftly taken to a native doctor in Aguleri, Anambra State.
Justice Marshal-Umukoro, in delivering the judgment, emphasized that the evidence, including a confessional statement by one of the defendants, implicated them in the crime.
The court underscored the legality of using investigating police officers’ testimonies as admissible evidence.
Following the verdict, Akpoguma expressed gratitude to the court for upholding justice and reaffirmed the effectiveness of the judicial system.
