President Bola Tinubu has criticized Nigeria’s current electricity generation capacity of 4.5GW, calling it a shame given the country’s size.
He made this remark during the inauguration of a 31-member Presidential Economic Coordination Council at the Council Chamber in the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Tinubu stressed the urgency of finding innovative solutions to the country’s economic challenges, particularly in the energy sector.
“We face the challenge of energy security in Nigeria,” Tinubu said.
“We need to work together to improve our oil and gas sector, and we must also increase electricity generation and distribution across the country. It’s a national embarrassment that we are still generating only 4.5GW of electricity.”
He underscored the necessity of increasing oil production to two million barrels per day within the next few months and expressed a strong commitment to removing barriers to investment in the energy sector to boost competitiveness.
“We are determined to achieve these goals with your cooperation, collaboration, and recommendations,” he added.
