A Kano State High Court has issued a perpetual injunction restraining the 15th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado-Bayero, and four other dethroned emirs of Bichi, Rano, Gaya, and Karaye from parading themselves as emirs.
The applicants in the case are the Attorney General of Kano State, the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, and the Kano State House of Assembly.
They filed a motion ex parte dated May 27, seeking to prevent Ado-Bayero and the other emirs from continuing to hold themselves out as emirs.
The respondents include Ado-Bayero, Alhaji Nasiru Ado-Bayero (Bichi emir), Dr Ibrahim Abubakar II (emir of Karaye), Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad-Inuwa (emir of Rano), and Alhaji Aliyu Ibrahim-Gaya (emir of Gaya).
Also listed are the Inspector General of Police, Director of State Security Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and Nigeria Army.
Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu delivered the judgment, affirming the authority of the Kano State House of Assembly to amend and propose legislation under Section 4 rule 6, 7(b) of the 1999 Constitution as amended.
The court further restrained security agencies from violating the Kano State Emirate (Repeal) Law 2024.
Justice Adamu-Aliyu ordered the deposed emirs to surrender all movable and immovable properties belonging to the Kano State Emirate Council to the state government.
The legal counsel representing Ado-Bayero withdrew from the case on July 4, 2024, and there were various motions and applications presented by other respondents during the proceedings.
This ruling follows the dissolution of four newly created emirate councils in Kano State by the State House of Assembly on May 23, and the subsequent reappointment of Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano by Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf.
