Tensions soared in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, on Tuesday as the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests entered their sixth day.
Protesters targeted a mansion owned by Nyesom Wike, the former governor of Rivers State and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
Over 50 protesters descended upon Wike’s property in Ada George, Ohio/Akpor Local Government Area, marching from Agip Junction and gathering in front of his residence while singing the national anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots.”
Police, equipped with an Armoured Personnel Carrier, established a barrier to prevent the protesters from approaching the mansion.
Despite the heavy police presence, including additional forces stationed at Hyper City Mall—another of Wike’s properties—the protesters dispersed after approximately 49 minutes and continued their demonstration.
Grace Iringe-Koko, spokesperson for the state police command, confirmed that no damage was inflicted on Wike’s properties.
She clarified, “The protesters only marched past the building. The police ensured they remained on the other side of the road and did not confront them.”
