The Super Eagles have plummeted eight places in the latest FIFA rankings, now sitting at 38th globally following a disappointing performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Nigeria’s campaign suffered significant setbacks with a historic loss to the Benin Republic and a draw against South Africa, leaving their qualification hopes in jeopardy.
In FIFA’s latest ranking released on Thursday, the Super Eagles are now ranked 5th in Africa, dropping two spots in the continental rankings.
Morocco has ascended to the top spot in Africa, ranking 12th globally. They are followed by Senegal (18th), Egypt (36th), and Cote d’Ivoire (37th), occupying the second, third, and fourth positions respectively in Africa.
Globally, Argentina, France, Belgium, Brazil, and England hold the top five positions.
The Super Eagles’ underwhelming World Cup qualification run has seen them accumulate only three points from four games, trailing Group C leaders Rwanda by four points.
In response to the poor performance, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced plans to hire a technical adviser for the team in the coming weeks.
Shortly after this announcement, Finidi George resigned as head coach, less than two months after his appointment. His resignation coincided with star forward Victor Osimhen’s public rebuttal to Finidi’s alleged comments accusing him of lacking commitment to the national team.
The NFF has yet to officially comment on Finidi’s resignation or Osimhen’s remarks. The Super Eagles’ next competitive fixture will be later in the year when the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers begin.
