On Monday, former chairmen from 21 out of 23 local government areas in Rivers State protested in their respective council areas.
These ex-council bosses, supporters of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, ignored a police directive against protests.
In Buguma, the headquarters of Asari-Toru LGA, former Chairman Onengiyeofori George led a march through the town with his supporters, chanting in solidarity with Wike.
They carried placards with messages like “Sim Fubara Can’t Continue to Act As He Likes” and “There’s No Vacancy in Asari-Toru Council,” urging the police to maintain their presence at the council headquarters.
According to Channels Television, the protest in Asari-Toru LGA nearly turned violent when men believed to be part of Asari Dokubo’s private military group, known as Amama soldiers, tried to confront the protesters.
The police quickly intervened and prevented any clashes. The protesters eventually handed a protest letter to the police.
In Abonnema, the headquarters of Akuku-Toru LGA, another group of people protested in support of the continued police closure of the council premises.
The police had taken control of the 23 LGA council secretariats in Rivers State last Tuesday due to a crisis following the expiration of the three-year tenure of the former chairmen, which resulted in three deaths.
