Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi State recently met with the 29 students from the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH) who were rescued after being abducted in May.
The meeting took place at the university premises as the students prepared for their examinations.
During the meeting, Governor Ododo reassured both the students and the university management of the improved security measures being implemented on campus.
This comes after the tragic abduction of 31 students on May 9, 2024, where 29 were later rescued in June, and sadly, two others were killed by the kidnappers.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the safety and security of students and educational institutions across the state.
He promised to complete the perimeter fencing of the university within four months and to ensure comprehensive security surveillance of the campus, with round-the-clock emergency response capabilities by security agencies.
Governor Ododo emphasized the importance of consistently reviewing and improving the university’s security architecture in collaboration with the institution’s management, aligning with the state government’s safe school initiative.
He stressed that his administration is dedicated to making education accessible and safe for the youth of Kogi State, and vowed to defeat criminal elements wherever they are found.
In honor of the two students who were killed, James Anajuwe and Caleb Musa, Governor Ododo promised to immortalize their memory.
He also took the opportunity to inspect ongoing projects at the university, including the Senate Building, new male and female hostels, and the University Demonstration Farms.
The Vice Chancellor of CUSTECH, Prof. Abdulrahman Salawu, expressed his gratitude to Governor Ododo for his unwavering support and fatherly role during and after the abduction crisis.
He also pledged the university management’s cooperation to ensure the institution’s speedy development, in line with the governor’s vision.
This meeting underscores Governor Ododo’s dedication to providing a secure and conducive learning environment for all students in Kogi State.
