Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has expressed dismay at the Nigerian Police Force’s lack of response to the recent attempted detonation of an explosive device in Port Harcourt, the state capital.
The incident occurred during a protest by supporters advocating for an extension of tenure for former local government council chairmen.
Governor Fubara voiced his surprise over the police’s prolonged silence on the matter, highlighting that if the act had been attributed to his supporters, terrorism charges would likely have been swiftly pursued against them.
He made these remarks after swearing in Emmanuel Frank-Fubara as the new Commissioner for Finance at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Monday.
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, Governor Fubara emphasized that Rivers State faces opposition from a singular adversary opposed to his administration, with others aligned against him but ultimately thwarted by divine intervention.
He remarked, “If this incident had involved me or anyone associated with me, Nigeria would have swiftly responded with arrests, statements, and press conferences.
However, because it implicates others, we’ve seen no action. Nonetheless, God has not allowed them to conceal it forever.”
Governor Fubara continued, questioning the delay in the Nigerian Police’s official statement regarding the attempted detonation near the Presidential Hotel in Port Harcourt.
He speculated that different treatment would have been accorded had the situation involved his allies.
Reflecting on governance in Rivers State, Governor Fubara affirmed satisfaction with the operational continuity of the duly recognized Rivers State House of Assembly.
He stressed the Assembly’s vital role in supporting effective governance without interruptions.
Addressing the newly appointed Commissioner, Governor Fubara urged him to uphold high standards of service and to impact lives positively.
He encouraged the Commissioner to prioritize the state’s interests and ensure exemplary performance.
He concluded, “I have confidence that you will excel and bring honor to us all. Let us continue to work together to elevate our state and its people.”
Governor Fubara’s remarks underscore concerns over perceived disparities in law enforcement response and highlight his administration’s commitment to governance and accountability in Rivers State.
