Governors Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State, and Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State have arrived at the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) headquarters in Abuja for a crucial meeting.
The gathering, led by Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq, is set to address significant issues, including the new minimum wage and local government autonomy.
The governors previously rejected the Federal Government’s proposal of a N62,000 minimum wage, citing that some states would need to borrow funds to meet this requirement.
Despite this stance, organized labor continues to demand a minimum wage of N250,000.
In light of these ongoing negotiations, the governors called for an emergency meeting after the Federal Executive Council postponed the minimum wage discussion on Tuesday to allow President Bola Tinubu to conduct broader consultations.
Additionally, the Federal Government’s case at the Supreme Court against the 36 state governors, which seeks to enforce full autonomy for local governments, remains unresolved.
The outcome of this meeting could significantly impact the pending case and future governance structures in Nigeria.
