Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, along with his fellow governors, expressed optimism and commitment to their citizens as Nigeria marks the 25th anniversary of its democracy.
After extending congratulations to Nigerians on this significant milestone, Governor Makinde paid tribute to the past heroes who sacrificed for the return of democracy in Nigeria.
According to Makinde, “Today, we celebrate 25 years of continuous democratic government in our dear nation and the freedoms and development that this has brought. We also remember all those who sacrificed for the return of democracy in Nigeria; may their labours never be in vain. Happy Democracy Day.”
Kwara State Governor and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, echoed similar sentiments. In his Democracy Day message, he emphasized the importance of honoring the sacrifices of past heroes by demonstrating patriotism and contributing to developmental efforts that strengthen Nigeria’s democratic experience.
He urged political leaders to work diligently to fortify the institutions that promote and protect democracy in the country.
“We honor the memories of the heroes and heroines who bravely struggled for the current democratic dispensation we enjoy as a nation,” he stated.
“We may face a few challenges in this journey. We must, however, remain resolute, unbroken, and recommit to the ideals of democracy to build a more prosperous and enduring nation.”
In Ogun State, Governor Dapo Abiodun highlighted his administration’s commitment to justice and mercy by announcing the release of 41 convicts and the commutation of 45 death sentences.
This act of clemency, he noted, is a step toward a more compassionate society where deserving individuals are given second chances.
Reflecting on the significance of Nigeria’s Democracy Day, Governor Abiodun recalled the sacrifices made during the historic 1993 election, particularly the pivotal role of the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola. He praised President Bola Tinubu’s leadership under the “Renewed Hope” agenda, which symbolizes a collective commitment to unity, inclusivity, and progress.
“As we look to the future, we emphasize the importance of engaging our youth in the democratic process. Their energy, innovation, and participation are crucial for the continued growth and stability of our democracy,” he said.
Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, expressed joy as Nigerians celebrate, highlighting the country’s progress towards a brighter future. He stated, “Today, we honor the progress and resilience of our democratic journey. Let’s celebrate our freedom, unity, and the collective efforts that strengthen our democracy. Together, we build a brighter future.”
