Suspected armed robbers launched an attack on the Warri-Sapele highway in Delta State on Friday, robbing travelers of their money and valuables.
It was gathered that the hoodlums operated on the road from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, during which some travelers were injured and their belongings were forcefully taken.
According to sources, a young man from Elume who tried to escape from the robbery scene was shot by the robbers. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was confirmed dead on arrival.
Several other individuals who sustained injuries during the robbery were taken to Oghara Teaching Hospital for treatment.
Robbery incidents have become frequent on this road, especially at night when police patrol operatives leave their checkpoints, allowing robbers to take over the road. “It’s almost becoming a daily affair,” a source stated.
When contacted, Delta Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident.
“We are aware, and the DPO and his men swiftly went there. The armed robbers, however, escaped into the bush. But we are on their trail,” the PPRO stated.
