In a firmly worded response to a query issued by the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Afolabi Ghandi Olaoye, the Chief Imam of Ogbomoso, Sheikh Teliat Yinus Ayilara, has rejected the monarch’s authority over him.
Ayilara argues that the position of Chief Imam is not a traditional title and, therefore, does not fall under the jurisdiction of the traditional ruler.
Ayilara conveyed his stance in a letter addressed to the Soun, responding to a query regarding his journey to Saudi Arabia for the Hajj pilgrimage without informing the monarch.
In his letter, signed by his secretary Ogunleye Sulaimon Ajasa, Ayilara emphasized his deep respect for Yoruba culture and tradition, which prompted his response.
However, he maintained that, as a Muslim and the spiritual head of the Muslim community in Ogbomoso, his role and actions are governed by Islamic regulations, not Yoruba tradition.
“My case is that the office of Grand Chief Imam of Ogbomosoland is not a traditional title, and as such, it is not under the control of the Soun of Ogbomosoland,” Ayilara stated.
He further mentioned that there is an ongoing court case concerning his authority, and any demands from the Soun related to the appointment of other Muslim leaders in Ogbomoso are matters that should be respected by the court.
Ayilara reiterated that his actions, including the appointments of the Grand Mufti of Ogbomosoland, Amirul Wa’izin of Ogbomosoland, Khadimul-Islam of Ogbomosoland, and Kanzul ‘Ulama’ of Ogbomosoland, are within his rights as the Chief Imam.
He stated that he has referred the Soun’s letters to his lawyers for further legal action.
Concluding his letter, Ayilara expressed his blessings for Ogbomosoland, Oyo State, and Nigeria, affirming his commitment to the practice of Islam while respecting cultural traditions.
