Former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai has firmly dismissed allegations of embezzlement raised by the Kaduna State Assembly.
These allegations stem from a report adopted by the Assembly’s ad-hoc committee tasked with investigating his administration’s financial activities from May 2015 to May 2023.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by his spokesperson, Muyiwa Adekeye, El-Rufai defended his tenure, asserting that he led an honest and competent government over those eight years.
The Kaduna Assembly’s report, received on Wednesday, accuses the former governor and several commissioners of misappropriating state resources.
The Assembly claims that N423 billion was siphoned off during El-Rufai’s administration. They have urged the current Governor, Uba Sani, to refer El-Rufai and the former Commissioners of Finance to relevant security agencies for investigation.
Deputy Speaker Henry Magaji Danjuma, who chaired the ad-hoc committee, presented the report during a plenary session.
He stated that many loans obtained under El-Rufai’s administration were not used for their intended purposes, and due process was not followed in securing these loans.
The committee has recommended that El-Rufai and other implicated members of his cabinet be investigated and prosecuted by security and anti-corruption agencies.
The charges include abuse of office, awarding contracts without due process, diversion of public funds, and money laundering.
El-Rufai’s statement read: “We are aware of the news that the Kaduna State House of Assembly has adopted the report of the ad-hoc committee it asked to probe the El-Rufai government.”
