The Kogi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has branded Senator Dino Melaye a liability to the party.
PDP elders in the state, led by Ibrahim Dansofo, have urged the local executive committee in Ijumu to begin immediate suspension proceedings against Melaye.
They believe this move is necessary to restore the party’s integrity and focus on effective leadership.
On Saturday, Melaye criticized the acting national chairman of the PDP, Iliya Damagum, along with Samuel Anyanwu and Umar Bature, accusing them of irreparably damaging the party.
In response, the party elders condemned Melaye’s remarks, stating that his political influence has diminished to the point where he could not even secure a local councillor position.
The Dansofo-led group characterized Melaye as a liability, arguing that his association with the PDP serves only to negotiate personal gains with the ruling party, rather than to make any positive contribution.
“Senator Melaye has become a burden to the party,” Dansofo stated, accusing Melaye of hypocrisy in his criticism of the current leadership, particularly given that he was granted a governorship ticket despite being seen as incapable of winning even a primary election.
The Kogi PDP attributed the party’s current struggles to Melaye, calling his nomination a significant misstep that has led to their present difficulties.
They also urged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to reconsider their support for Melaye, describing him as a “bondage” and a “big-time liability” for the party.
The PDP elders called on the public to dismiss Melaye’s remarks as the desperate words of a man whose political relevance has long since faded.
They added that the Kogi PDP is determined to move forward, rebuild its strength, and reclaim its reputation as a formidable political force in the state.
They also challenged Melaye to account for the billions he allegedly collected in the name of the governorship election.
