Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has appointed six eminent individuals to serve in the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) in preparation for the upcoming local council elections.
The appointees include Justice Bola Okikiolu Ighile (Retd) as Chairman, alongside Mr. Samson Ajibade, Mr. Oluwo Durojaiye, Dr. Metilelu Olusola, Mr. Aileru Abeeb Dapo, and Mr. Oladele Adekanye as members.
Gbenga Omotoso, the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, announced these appointments on Wednesday.
Omotoso stated, “Details of the swearing-in ceremony will be announced in due course.”
LASIEC recently embarked on a reform journey to review electoral laws, aiming to meet international standards.
Ademola Gbadegesin, Director of Elections Operations, emphasized the importance of local government elections in fostering participatory democracy and ensuring good governance at the grassroots level.
Following a recent Supreme Court judgment granting financial autonomy to local councils and prohibiting federal allocation to councils managed by caretaker committees, several states, including Lagos, are gearing up for local government elections.
The Supreme Court’s ruling affirmed that democratically elected local governments are fundamental and denounced the practice of appointing caretaker committees by state governors as unconstitutional.
