Liverpool FC have clinched the English Premier League title with a commanding 5-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday.
The Reds needed only a point to secure the championship and match Manchester United’s record of 20 English league titles, but they achieved the milestone in emphatic style.
Goals from Luis Díaz, Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, and an own goal by Destiny Udogie ensured Liverpool’s dominance on a memorable afternoon.
“This is the most beautiful club in the world. We deserve this. We are going to enjoy the next couple of weeks and take it in,” Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk told Sky Sports after the final whistle.
Salah’s goal during the match not only contributed to Liverpool’s triumph but also saw him become the highest-scoring foreign player in Premier League history with 185 goals.
Arsenal’s 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace last Wednesday had already meant they could no longer catch Liverpool, even with four matches left to play.
Liverpool’s achievement comes in the first season under new manager Arne Slot, who succeeded Jürgen Klopp after leaving Dutch champions Feyenoord last summer.
The Merseyside club now sits 15 points clear at the top of the table, having suffered only two defeats in 34 league matches so far this season.
Reflecting on the victory, Van Dijk said: “I was desperate to win it for them [the fans] and all the fans around the world, and for us as well.”
Liverpool’s last Premier League title win came during the 2019-2020 season, secured while players watched Manchester City’s defeat to Chelsea at Formby Hall Hotel due to COVID-19 restrictions.
With four matches remaining, Liverpool will have the opportunity to further extend their lead and celebrate a historic season under their new leadership.
