Residents of Idekan Farm Settlement in the Ijebu-Ode area of Ogun State were horrified when Matthew James killed his 55-year-old wife, Etim Mary, over suspicions of infidelity.
The incident occurred around 8:00 p.m. on Sunday. NATIONAL UPDATES learned from various community and police sources that James, now in police custody, committed the crime after suspecting his wife of having an affair with another man in the community.
An anonymous eyewitness revealed that police operatives from the Ijebu-Igbo Division had taken James into custody. The suspect reportedly claimed that he and his late wife had a “blood covenant” promising not to betray each other.
“They had a blood covenant that they would not leave each other. He suspected his wife was having an extramarital affair. The woman had been married before she met James and had grown-up children. James married her later in life,” the source said.
“He returned one morning with a machete and hacked the woman to death. He didn’t flee but stood beside her after committing the crime.”
Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson for the state police command, commented on the shocking incident, stating that Etim Mary was pronounced dead by a doctor after being rushed to the hospital by other residents.
“She was found lying in a pool of her blood in front of the house around 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, with deep cuts on her forehead, shoulders, and other parts of her body. Her husband was found with the blood-soaked machete believed to have been used in the attack,” Odutola said.
“Her body was taken to a general hospital in Ijebu-Igbo and later moved to Alayangbe Private Mortuary in Oke-Agbo, Ijebu-Igbo, for an autopsy.
The case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Abeokuta after the preliminary investigation is concluded.”
