A notorious drug baron wanted by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, identified as Joachin Mbonu, has been apprehended.
Mbonu was captured by NDLEA operatives in his opulent mansion in Imo State on July 5.
According to NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, Mbonu is allegedly the leader of a drug cartel involved in the production of methamphetamine.
The syndicate, with bases in Imo and Rivers states, has been under investigation for distributing large quantities of methamphetamine across the South-East, South-South, and other regions.
During the operation, law enforcement recovered 419.99 grams of methamphetamine, 750 grams of iodine, and a pump action gun with cartridges from Mbonu’s residence.
Additional raids in Imo and Rivers states led to the confiscation of more illicit drugs and firearms linked to the syndicate.
Babafemi revealed that Mbonu had fled South Africa where he had lived for years, and upon returning to Nigeria, he allegedly established clandestine meth labs in remote villages to continue his illegal operations.
As Mbonu faces charges, the NDLEA has earmarked two of his mansions in Imo State for possible forfeiture to the Federal Government.
