The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has imposed a series of hefty fines and sanctions on Enyimba International FC following their conduct during the Match Day 35 fixture against Rangers International FC at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu on Sunday, June 9.
In a letter dated June 10, signed by NPFL Chief Operating Officer Davidson Owumi, Enyimba was cited for multiple breaches of league rules during the match, which ended in abandonment.
The match was goalless in added time when the center referee awarded a penalty to Rangers, leading to a pitch invasion by Enyimba fans in protest. As a result, Enyimba was found to have violated several rules, including: Rule C9: Failing to ensure proper conduct, Rule B13.18: Throwing objects and encroaching onto the field of play, Rule C1.1: Refusing to continue the match in protest, which is against fair play and sportsmanship, Rule B13.24: Causing the disruption and discontinuation of the match.
The sanctions imposed include: A fine of N1 million for failing to ensure proper conduct, A fine of N5 million for disrupting a live broadcast, A fine of N1 million for throwing objects onto the field of play, A fine of N1 million for field encroachment, Forfeiture of three points and three goals in favor of Rangers and A fine of N2 million for causing the match disruption.
Enyimba has also been ordered to identify and produce for investigation players Eze Ekwutoziam (Jersey No. 6), Chibuike Nwaiwu (Jersey No. 27), and Akanni Elijah (Jersey No. 10), who were complicit in the conduct leading to the game’s discontinuation.
The NPFL has given Enyimba 48 hours to accept the summary jurisdiction and sanctions or face a disciplinary panel. Failure to comply or submitting a frivolous appeal may result in additional sanctions.
