Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State announced that the current Balogun of Ibadanland, Owolabi Akinloye Olakulehin, will be installed as the Olubadan once he is strong enough to complete the coronation process.
This statement was made today during a state burial ceremony for Oba Balogun at Obafemi Awolowo Stadium in the Oke Ado area of Ibadan the state capital.
The Olubadan stool became vacant following the passing of the 42nd Olubadan, Oba Mahood Olalekan Balogun, on March 14th of this year.
Olakulehin had been nominated and appointed as the 43rd Olubadan by the Olubadan-in-Council during a meeting chaired by the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, High Chief Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja.
Governor Makinde emphasized that Olakulehin’s ascension to the throne would only occur when he is physically prepared for the coronation.
Addressing the attendees, Makinde affirmed his acceptance of the Olubadan-in-Council’s recommendation but reiterated that the coronation would proceed once Olakulehin is in good health.
According to him, “those who didn’t want us to celebrate Baba sent the rain, but I instructed people to charm the rain away. As they continue that, keep eating, drinking, and celebrating our late kabiyesi.”
“One thing to take away today is that the late Kabiyesi and I achieved what many thought impossible.
On Friday, May 26, 2023, myself and the House of Assembly amended the Chieftaincy Laws of Oyo State, so the governor no longer needs to go to the Council of Chiefs to amend the Declaration of Obas. We amended the Ibadan Chieftaincy Declaration, and those who haven’t seen it should look for it.
That declaration is now in force to enthrone the Olubadan of Ibadanland,” He said.
Governor Makinde assured that the due process had been followed and Olakulehin would be enthroned as soon as he is strong enough.
“I have seen the recommendation of the Olubadan-in-Council and I have accepted it. As soon as our father, Oba Olakulehin, is strong enough, he will be enthroned,” Makinde concluded.
