Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, on Thursday, paid N300 million to 377 farmers and landowners whose properties were acquired for the construction of the Ekiti State Agro-Allied Cargo Airport along Ado-Ijan Road.
The governor noted that this marked the third and final tranche of compensation payments to individuals and families affected by the land acquisition for the state’s airport facility.
Represented by Deputy Governor Mrs. Monisade Afuye, Oyebanji distributed cheques to affected farmers and landowners from communities including Ijan, Igbemo, Afao, and Iworoko, urging them not to disrupt ongoing project activities.
He dismissed concerns that the airport project was a misplaced priority, explaining it is part of a larger economic expansion strategy. “Ekiti State cargo airport project was conceived not just as an infrastructural achievement, but as a critical pillar in our mission to drive economic diversification, stimulate local industry, and create new opportunities for the people of Ekiti,” he said.
The governor emphasized that the airport would enhance connectivity to national and international markets and become a gateway for agriculture, commerce, and tourism, fueling local business growth and attracting investments that will benefit Ekiti communities.
Oyebanji commended the farmers and landowners for their sacrifices and patience, describing the compensation as a recognition of their patriotism toward a common goal. “The claimants we are honouring here today have demonstrated an inspiring commitment to the future of Ekiti, agreeing to adjust their lives for a greater good that will ultimately benefit every citizen of this state,” he said.
He also reassured the public that his administration is dedicated to fulfilling its promises, stating that fair compensation for those affected is both a legal and moral obligation.
Prof. James Olaleye, Special Adviser on Geographic Information System, Lands, and Survey explained that the compensation serves as indemnity for losses suffered by landowners. He reassured claimants with pending compensation from other project sites that their dues would be settled soon.
Representatives of the benefiting communities, Chief Ojo Awe and Mr. Olufemi Oso, expressed gratitude to the governor for addressing the concerns of landowners through compensation payments.
