The Oyo State House of Assembly has launched a 2-day workshop focused on boosting the effectiveness of its legislative committees in partnership with the African Governance Institute for Development (AGID), the workshop began on October 27, 2024, at the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in Ibadan.
The initiative aims to strengthen governance through enhanced committee performance, emphasizing the committees’ roles in scrutinizing proposed legislation, overseeing government agencies, conducting public hearings, and reviewing budget proposals.
In his opening remarks, Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, highlighted the critical role of legislative committees in the Assembly’s work.
“Our committees are the backbone of our legislative process, essential to serving the people of Oyo State. This workshop theme—strengthening governance through enhanced committee impact—aligns closely with our vision for a more effective and responsive legislature,” Ogundoyin said.
He emphasized committees’ responsibilities in legislative review, oversight of government agencies, and ensuring fiscal responsibility.
The Speaker also expressed appreciation for the Oyo State Government’s commitment to capacity building, noting its role in supporting the Assembly’s legislative expertise and constitutional obligations.
In a keynote address, former Minister Sen. Adeleke Mamora encouraged lawmakers to view their roles as service to their communities, urging dedication and commitment to representation, oversight, and lawmaking.
“The most important role of a lawmaker is representation. You are the eyes, ears, and voice of your people.
Legislature is fundamental to democracy and good governance,” Mamora remarked.
Welcoming the attendees, AGID founding member and former Oyo State legislator Hon. Seyi Adisa emphasized the workshop’s practical approach, designed to empower lawmakers with real-world skills.
“This is more than theory. You’ll engage in interactive sessions, explore case studies, and tackle real legislative challenges. Our goal is to equip you with tools to turn constituents’ hopes into reality,” Adisa explained.
