The Oyo State Government has declared Wednesday, August 20, 2025, a public holiday in commemoration of Isese Day, set aside annually to celebrate traditional religion practitioners and promote Yoruba cultural heritage.
Governor Seyi Makinde approved the holiday in recognition of the significance of the festival, which is widely observed across Yoruba-speaking states as a day to honour deities, ancestors, and the traditions of the people.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Wasiu Olatunbosun, the government explained that the holiday would enable adherents of traditional religion and members of the public to fully participate in cultural activities, prayers, and events lined up for the day.
Dr. Olatunbosun noted that the recognition of Isese Day reflects Oyo State’s commitment to inclusivity, religious harmony, and respect for all faiths.
He urged residents to embrace the values of peace, unity, and tolerance, which are vital for the development and progress of the state.
Isese Day has grown in prominence over the years, attracting participation from Yoruba communities within Nigeria and in the diaspora. The festival is not only a celebration of faith but also a strong reminder of the need to preserve indigenous traditions for future generations.
