Kano State police have apprehended a 22-year-old suspected kidnapper, Zakariyya Muhammad, within 16 hours of his alleged abduction of an 18-month-old child.
The arrest was confirmed in a statement by SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, spokesperson for the Police Command on Tuesday.
According to Haruna, the incident began when a resident of Sabuwar Gandu Kwarin Barka Quarters, Kano reported receiving a call from an unknown person claiming to have kidnapped his 2½-year-old daughter, Amina, and demanded a ransom of N2 million for her safe return.
Upon receiving the report on July 4, 2024, the Commissioner of Police, CP Salman Dogo Garba, promptly mobilized the Anti-kidnapping Squad led by SP Aliyu Muhammad Auwal. Their mission was to rescue the victim within 24 hours and apprehend the suspect.
Through diligent efforts and intelligence-led operations, the squad successfully arrested Zakariyya Muhammad at 8 am on July 5, 2024.
The suspect, who resides in the same neighborhood as the victim, confessed to acting alone and led investigators to the location where the child was being held.
Fortunately, the victim, Amina, was found unharmed in an isolated area within their locality. She was immediately taken to Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, Kano, where she was examined, confirmed to be in good health, and subsequently discharged.
CP Salman Dogo Garba assured the public that such reprehensible acts would not go unpunished, emphasizing the Command’s commitment to using all available resources to prevent and combat criminal activities in the state.
The Commissioner also expressed gratitude to law-abiding citizens and urged continued vigilance and cooperation with the police in ensuring safety and security across Kano State.
