The presidency has urged Nigerians to turn to subsistence farming as a solution to the challenge posed by escalating food prices.
Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, conveyed this message during a meeting with a group of online editors from the Association of Corporate Online Editors (ACOE) in Abuja.
According to a statement released by ACOE Chairman, Mr. Martins Odiete, the presidency highlighted historical initiatives such as ‘Operation Feed the Nation’ introduced by former President Olusegun Obasanjo in 1976, aimed at promoting agriculture.
Mr. Onanuga also referenced challenges faced in 1984 during President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure, which necessitated government intervention to ensure essential commodities like rice, milk, and sugar were accessible to the populace.
“This is not the first time we have encountered such crises,” remarked Mr. Onanuga.
“The government is actively investing in agriculture to improve availability and affordability, and individual participation is crucial.”
Acknowledging current economic challenges, Mr. Onanuga assured that the government’s agricultural initiatives would yield tangible results within the next twelve months.
He noted global trends affecting living costs and affirmed the government’s commitment to alleviating hardship for Nigerians.
Mr. Onanuga also underscored the importance of a collaborative relationship with the media for effective dissemination of information in accordance with global standards.
Mr. Odiete emphasized the critical role of partnerships in ensuring accurate and responsible news delivery to the public, especially during times of heightened information demand.
