The Campaign for Democratic and Workers’ Rights (CDWR) has condemned the ongoing detention of Michael Adaramoye (also known as Michael Lenin), Sodiq Mosiu, and other #Endbadgovernance protesters, calling for their immediate and unconditional release.
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Chinedu Bosah, CDWR criticized the Nigerian government under President Bola Tinubu for the illegal and unjustified incarceration of the protesters without trial for the past three weeks.
“The Nigerian Police and the Bola Tinubu-led regime are determined to maintain the incarceration of #Endbadgovernance protesters and activists.
It has been about three weeks since Michael Adaramoye (Michael Lenin), Sodiq Mosiu, and others were illegally and unjustly detained by the Nigerian Police on the orders of Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser to President Tinubu, without trial,” the statement read.
The rights group further alleged that the detainees have been denied access to legal representation, communication with family members, and basic human needs, including food, healthcare, and essential housing materials.
Due to the inhumane conditions, some detainees have fallen ill, and the government has reportedly denied them the right to medical treatment.
CDWR also condemned the actions of the Nigerian Police, who allegedly obtained a clandestine remand order from the Federal High Court in Abuja on August 22, 2024, to extend the protesters’ detention by 60 days without their legal representatives present.
“The judiciary is being used to enable the dictatorship of the Tinubu-led regime. Since the preparation for the #Endbadgovernance protest, the government has used the judiciary across the country to undermine the constitutional and democratic rights of Nigerians to peacefully protest bad governance and anti-people policies,” CDWR stated.
The group concluded by reiterating its demand for the immediate and unconditional release of Michael Adaramoye, Sodiq Mosiu, Eleojo Opaluwa, and other detained protesters, condemning the government’s actions as undemocratic and unjust.
