The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’adu Abubakar III, and Archbishop Daniel Okoh, President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), have called for an immediate end to the nationwide protests in Nigeria.
Their joint statement, issued alongside Prof. Cornelius Afebu Omonokhua, Executive Secretary of NIREC, appeals to the youth to cease the demonstrations.
The Sultan emphasized the need for dialogue, urging protesters and their supporters to de-escalate the situation. He expressed concerns about the potential for violence and instability, stating:
“With the ongoing protests and escalating tension, His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of JNI, urges all involved parties to lay down their grievances and come to the negotiation table.
The fear of uncontrollable escalation is growing, and in the name of Allah, we call for an end to the unrest. A stable Nigeria is essential for us to proudly call ourselves Nigerians.”
The Sultan also urged Imams and Muslim leaders to promote peace during Friday prayers and implored President Tinubu to address the nation, reassuring citizens of efforts towards peace, security, and economic relief.
He called on State Governors to also play their part in calming tensions and emphasized the need for swift action to address the nation’s issues.
In a related statement, the NIREC expressed deep concern over the escalation of the protests, which turned violent on August 1, 2024. The council highlighted the loss of lives and property and urged Nigerians to halt the protests to allow the government an opportunity to respond.
“NIREC observes with a heavy heart the recent shift from peaceful protests to violence,” the statement read.
“In just one day, we have witnessed significant loss and destruction. Prolonged unrest could lead to even greater damage.”
The council called on security agencies to act professionally and urged the government to address citizens’ needs promptly.
NIREC concluded by emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the country.
