Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has announced that President Bola Tinubu has approved the upgrade of Ibadan Domestic Airport, Alakia, to an international airport.
This approval follows Governor Makinde’s request to the federal government to elevate the status of the Ibadan facility to a global level.
Governor Makinde disclosed this on Wednesday, June 26, while receiving the Chief of Air Staff of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), Air Marshal Hassan Baba Abubakar, during a courtesy visit at the Governor’s Office, State Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.
“Hosting an international airport in Ibadan will propel the tourism sector and provide a vital communication link between different groups of people within the region.
The upgrade will also attract foreign investments to the region and ultimately increase Nigeria’s gross domestic product,” Makinde stated.
He assured that work on the project will commence once all necessary documentation is perfected from the Presidency.
Makinde also sought the involvement of Air Force personnel in the state to ensure the project meets required operating standards.
Earlier, Air Marshal Hassan Baba Abubakar urged Governor Makinde to expedite action on the ongoing 10-kilometer Ajia-Airport road project to ease the movement of personnel relocating to the Air Force base.
He also appealed for compensation for residents of Ajia Airforce Base to avoid hindering the performance and activities of the Force.
