The University of Lagos (UNILAG), Lagos State University (LASU), and Pan-Atlantic University (PAU) entered into an educational cooperative partnership agreement with Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, USA on Tuesday.
The collaboration aims to advance women’s education and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education through joint initiatives.
The partnership also encompasses creative industries and international exchange programs for faculty and students, designed to be mutually beneficial.
The signing ceremony featured Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG; Prof. Adenike Boyo, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) of LASU; Prof. Sola Oni, Dean of the School of Management and Social Science at PAU; and Dr. Helene Gayle from Spelman College.
Dubbed “Developing Partnerships between U.S. and Nigerian Institutions of Higher Education,” the initiative was lauded by Ogunsola as a means to strengthen ties with the diaspora community, enhance STEM education capacity, and foster collaborative research.
Gayle commended the Lagos-based universities for their commitment to faculty growth and national development, emphasizing the potential of the partnership to stimulate new academic collaborations and exchange programs.
Representing LASU, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, through Prof. Adenike Boyo, expressed LASU’s enthusiasm for leveraging the partnership to bolster its Africa Centre of Excellence for Innovative and Transformative STEM Education, highlighting recent expansions in disciplines such as tourism, film, performing arts, cultural studies, and disabilities support.
The event, hosted at UNILAG, was attended by Mr. Richard Mills Jr., U.S. Consul-General in Nigeria, members of the U.S. Presidential Advisory Committee, leaders from universities in Lagos, and stakeholders from partner institutions.
