The Senate Committee on Constitution Review, chaired by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, has commenced consideration of a new framework proposing the establishment of state police across Nigeria.

The document, submitted by the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, outlines a comprehensive roadmap for decentralising policing in the country. The submission was made through the Chairman of the Nigeria Police Committee on State Police, Professor Olu Ogunsakin.

Spanning 75 pages, the framework details operational structures, governance models, and coordination mechanisms between proposed state police commands and the federal police system. It is expected to guide lawmakers as they deliberate on amendments to the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria.

Responding to the submission, Senator Jibrin assured that the committee would thoroughly examine the recommendations as part of ongoing constitutional reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture.

The proposal is also seen as aligning with the broader security agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has repeatedly emphasised the need for innovative approaches to tackling insecurity nationwide.

The move signals a renewed push within the National Assembly to explore decentralised policing as a viable solution to Nigeria’s growing security challenges.
