Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has begun exploring a contingency strategy ahead of the 2027 General Elections, following a major shift within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The development comes after the party’s National Chairman, Taminu Turaki, moved to align with a faction reportedly backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, under what has been described as a reconciliation effort.

Despite the move, Makinde appears unfazed, maintaining his distance from the factional leadership structure. Turaki had earlier called for unity within the party, urging members to “sheath the sword” and engage with the National Caretaker Working Committee (NCWC) led by Abdulrahman Mohammed.

Makinde, however, reiterated his stance during recent political engagements, including a visit to Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, where he firmly stated his commitment to the PDP but rejected any form of collaboration with the Wike-backed NCWC.

The Oyo governor also raised concerns about what he described as subtle moves to align the PDP with the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, warning that cooperation with the NCWC could indirectly support the president’s re-election bid.

Addressing party supporters in Oyo State, Makinde emphasized that he would not engage in negotiations with the factional leadership. He further assured loyalists that should internal cohesion within the PDP collapse, alternative political arrangements would be put in place.

According to him, aspirants may be supported to contest under a different political platform if necessary, with further details expected to be unveiled on April 18.
