Superintendent of Police Ibrahim Sini has explained why he turned down a N150 million bribe allegedly offered to him by Lagos-based businessman Akintoye Akindele.
Akindele, who was arraigned at the Federal High Court in Abuja in August 2023, was subsequently remanded in the Kuje correctional centre.
According to the charge sheet, Akindele offered the bribe to Sini to secure permission to escape abroad and to receive a favourable report from the police after the investigation.
Sini led the Inspector General of Police’s team of investigators handling the case against the businessman.
Speaking at a dinner organised to honour him on Friday, Sini recounted the event and his decision to reject the bribe.
He said, “I am very happy to be here and I want to appreciate the organisers of this programme. They have surpassed my expectations and added more encouragement for me.”
At the event, Sini was awarded a plot of land in Abuja. Reflecting on the incident, he recalled, “Yes, I remember when the incident happened.
The person in question asked me, ‘Do you want to be rich? This is an opportunity for you to be rich.’ So I said it depends on the kind of riches.
I want money that allows me to sleep peacefully at night. I don’t want something that will make me anxious and cause me to hide.
I chose to do the right thing to have peace of mind and serve justice for myself, the Nigeria Police, and the country at large.”
Sini also advised the youth of the country to uphold their integrity and not trade it for anything.
Presenting the land documents to Sini, Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police Benneth Igweh commended SP Sini’s actions, stating that his conduct has brought pride to the Nigerian Police Force
