On Tuesday, former President Olusegun Obasanjo paid a solidarity visit to the South-East Governors.
During this meeting, the governors decided to approach President Bola Tinubu to advocate for the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
Following a marathon meeting that lasted over seven hours, the South-East Governors addressed the media.
The governors, all present at the meeting, also formed a burial committee led by former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim to honor the late Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu.
The Chairman of the South-East Governors Forum and Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma, stated, “The Forum commiserates with the family of Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, and indeed the entire South-East region and the family of Ogbonnaya Onu on the demise of His Excellency Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu.”
Uzodinma added, “The Forum received a delegation led by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, and His Royal Majesty Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, who came on a solidarity visit to this Forum.”
The Forum reviewed and discussed the South-East security and economic summit report held in Owerri, Imo State, on September 28, 2023.
They agreed to implement key aspects of the report concerning security and economic integration within the region. The governors affirmed their commitment to actionable plans on these issues.
Furthermore, the Forum resolved to meet with President Tinubu to discuss pressing concerns affecting the South-East region and to secure the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
The Ogbonnaya Onu burial committee includes former Governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Amechi, serving as the committee’s Secretary, along with other Igbo leaders from Igbo-speaking states.
