President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to improving the welfare of Nigerian workers, promising better wages and enhanced working conditions.
In a meeting with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) in Abuja, Tinubu expressed his administration’s dedication to addressing workers’ concerns.
According to a statement by his spokesman, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Tinubu emphasized the importance of a happy and productive workforce for national development.
He also stressed the need for a pragmatic approach to wage adjustments, urging realistic expectations amid economic challenges.
“We must adjust wages in accordance with available resources. Rather than every five years, we can consider adjusting every two or three years based on changing economic dynamics,” Tinubu stated.
NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero highlighted the pressing need for an upward review of the minimum wage, advocating for a balance between a living wage and the current minimum wage, given the hardships faced by Nigerian workers.
Meanwhile, TUC President Comrade Festus Osifo raised concerns about inflation and its impact on the value of the naira.
He acknowledged government initiatives aimed at reducing food and transportation costs, including the rollout of Compressed Natural Gas-powered buses and the suspension of duty on selected food imports.
Both union leaders commended Tinubu on the Supreme Court’s decision affirming financial autonomy for local governments, pledging continued collaboration on workers’ welfare issues.
Discussions have been adjourned to allow for broader consultations with stakeholders.
The meeting underscores Tinubu’s proactive stance on addressing labor issues and his commitment to fostering a conducive environment for workers across Nigeria.
