On Sunday, a significant political shift occurred in Abia as 86 constituents of Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Benjamin Kalu, defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The defectors were previously affiliated with the Labour Party (LP), the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in Ugwueke/Ezeukwu Ward, which Kalu represents in the National Assembly.

According to a statement from Kalu’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Levinus Nwabughiogu, among the defectors is Arthur Paul Chukwu Ota, a prominent PDP youth leader.

During his visit to the Ward to thank constituents for their support in the 2023 general elections, Kalu welcomed the new APC members and praised their decision to join the ruling party.

He highlighted the APC’s achievements under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, notably the signing of the South East Development Commission (SEDC) bill into law—an important development for the region after 54 years.

Kalu emphasized that the SEDC will create job opportunities and address infrastructural needs in the South East.

“What you have done today shows that APC is working for the people. This party represents progress,” Kalu said. “The president has fulfilled our prayers by establishing the SEDC. Your children will benefit from the opportunities it brings.”

He urged continued support for President Tinubu, expressing confidence in his commitment to the nation. Kalu also distributed rice, fertilizers, and cash donations to support local agriculture and economic development.

Upon his arrival, Kalu and his team were warmly received by former Abia State House of Assembly minority leader Hon. Chijioke Chukwu, the Ugwueke Traditional Rulers Council, and local women and youth associations.
