President Bola Tinubu has extended his congratulations to Claudia Sheinbaum on her historic election as Mexico’s first female president.

In a statement released on Wednesday by his spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu celebrated Sheinbaum’s victory, noting that her election marks a significant milestone for women’s representation in government, breaking the political glass ceiling.

“The election of Claudia Sheinbaum as Mexico’s first female leader amplifies the voices of women in governance and signifies a profound shift towards gender equality in political leadership,” Tinubu stated.

President Tinubu further emphasized the global impact of Sheinbaum’s election, stating, “Sheinbaum’s victory sends a powerful message worldwide that women should not only be participants but also principal architects in shaping and implementing decisions that affect many lives.”

On behalf of the Nigerian government and its people, President Tinubu congratulated the citizens of Mexico and expressed a desire to strengthen bilateral ties between the two nations, focusing on areas of mutual interest.

According to official results from Mexico’s National Electoral Institute, Sheinbaum, a 61-year-old scientist and former mayor of Mexico City, secured approximately 58-60% of the votes. This significant lead placed her more than 30 percentage points ahead of her main opposition rival, Xochitl Galvez, who conceded defeat, and over 50 percentage points ahead of the only male candidate, centrist Jorge Alvarez Maynez.

Sheinbaum’s popularity is largely attributed to the support of outgoing President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, a fellow leftist and her mentor, who maintains an approval rating exceeding 60%. Lopez Obrador is constitutionally limited to a single term.
