Heavy shooting erupted at the premises of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area in Rivers State as LGA Chairman Hon Allwell Ihundah attempted to access his office.
This development has caused significant tension, leading to the temporary closure of nearby businesses.
Reports indicate that Chairman Ihundah arrived at the council secretariat this morning with his security personnel, intending to enter his office. However, he was stopped by youths who had occupied the premises since Monday.
The tenure of the elected Chairmen of Local Government and Councillors expired on June 17, as stipulated by the Constitution.
Despite this, the LGA bosses have refused to vacate their offices, citing a purported amendment to the Local Government Administration Law by the Martin Amaewhule-led State Assembly, which extended their tenure by six months. However, a State High Court in Port Harcourt voided this amendment.
In a statewide broadcast this morning, Governor Siminialayi Fubara bid farewell to the elected chairmen and councilors, stating that their legal tenure had ended.
Despite this, Chairman Ihundah allegedly returned to the council secretariat on Tuesday to retrieve some of his belongings but was met with resistance from angry youths.
