Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has approved the appointment of Oba Akinloye Olakunlehin as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland.
The announcement was made by the state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Olusegun Olayiwola, in a statement released on Wednesday in Ibadan, the state capital.
Olayiwola stated that Governor Makinde’s approval came through a memo dated June 14, 2024, leveraging the authority granted by Section 19 (Cap 28) Law of Oyo State 2000, as amended. The commissioner explained that this approval is the final step in a series of processes outlined by the state’s laws for royal succession.
The governor extended his congratulations to the new Olubadan and expressed hopes that his reign would usher in significant developments for Ibadanland and Oyo State.
In April, the Olubadan-In-Council nominated Olakunlehin as the 43rd Olubadan following the death of the previous Olubadan, Oba Lekan Balogun, on March 14 at the age of 81.
However, the nomination was met with some controversy. The Otun Balogun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Abimbola Ajibola, had raised concerns about Olakunlehin’s physical fitness to assume the throne.
In response, Olakunlehin affirmed his medical fitness and readiness to serve as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland.
