The Special Adviser on Security Matters to Oyo State Governor, CP (rtd) Fatai Owoseni has called on the federal government to embrace the use of the elements of geo-spatial technology alongside proper funding of the police as well as bridging the gap between the rich and the poor in Nigeria as important ways to end Insecurity in Nigeria.
He said this in his keynote address at the maiden edition of the 2025 Annual Luncheon and Welcome Ceremony for newly-inducted Fellows of the Nigeran Institution of Surveyors’ Body of Fellows, Oyo State Branch, which held at the International Conference Center, U.I on Thursday.
Owoseni harped on the need for Nigerian leaders to provide technological intelligence support to fight Insecurity, shun corruption, bad governance and ensure eradication of poverty, so as to allow the struggle to end criminalities become successful.
Citing popular and successful police and military operations in Nigeria in the past, the Chairman, Oyo State Security Fund, said the use of Geo-Spatial elements like Global Positioning System (GPS), Remote Sensing and others have been used by various security agencies to get security intelligence in locating the movements of criminals and illegal weapons in the country.
He mentioned the famous arrest of the popular convicted kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, known as ‘Evans’ and notable other criminal elements around the country as possible with the use of Geo-Spatial technology.
“We used elements of Geo-Spatial intelligence to arrest Evans, the kidnapper, it was the elements that were used to geo-locate him, monitor conversation (lawful intercept), to get his exact location.
“From Festac to Badagry and other areas he operated, we monitored, using these intelligence elements till he was arrested, so was technology used to monitor the movement of criminal herders infiltrating Nigeria from neighboring countries.
“In Oyo State, we have our eyes on all entries into the State, we use the emergency security free toll, called ‘615’, we have Oyo State Crime Alert platform and the Safe School Initiative, in which panic buttons are installed in government-owned higher institutions of learning to escalate emergency attention.”
The retired police urged the government to do more in pre-emptying crime by revamping the police system in Nigeria, citing poor working condition as one of the worst causes professional neglect among personnel.
He also canvassed bridging the gaps between the security agencies and professional bodies like Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS), so as to exchange ideas on emerging technologies and data update, while charging security agencies to find solutions to the problem of superiority contest over custody of security intelligence.
In his welcome address, the Chairman, Body of Fellows, Oyo State Branch, Surveyor Olufemi Isaac Akintola noted that it was heartwarming to announce that Oyo State Branch had the highest number of Fellows that were inducted during the 2025 Investiture Ceremony of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors that took place at Akure, Ondo State in May, 2025.
He added that the topic addressed by the keynote speaker was essential as the nation relied on professional bodies like NIS to come up with robust action plans to combat security challenges in Nigeria.
Among the security experts and other dignitaries in attendance at the event was Brig. General S.O.G Aremu , Commander 43 Engineer, who represented the General Officer Command, 2nd Mechanized Division, Ibadan, Major General Chinedu Nnebeife, Deputy Commandant, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), DCC Ademu Stephen and Surveyor Prince Afolabi Solesi, who represented the National Chairman of the Board of Fellows.
