Defying a heavy police and military presence, protesters gathered in large numbers on Saturday, August 10, 2024, in Abuja’s Apo and Lokogoma districts.
This marked the tenth day of the ongoing protests against bad governance, which had earlier promised a one-million-man march.
The protesters avoided the heavily guarded MKO Abiola National Stadium, City Gate, and Eagle Square, instead assembling at Apo and Lokogoma from 7 am.
They carried placards demanding an end to hunger and a reversal of the fuel subsidy removal.
The protests, which began on August 1, took a violent turn when hoodlums hijacked the demonstrations, leading to widespread looting, destruction of infrastructure, and attacks on motorists.
In several northern states, including Kano, Zamfara, Kaduna, and Bauchi, some violent demonstrators escalated tensions by flying foreign flags and calling for regime change—a move condemned by Nigerians, security agencies, and even the organizers of the protests.
