The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has suspended Pastor Idowu Iluyomade, the Senior Pastor of the City of David Parish in Lagos State.
Iluyomade, who also oversees the Apapa Family of the church’s annex, received his suspension following the extravagant 60th birthday celebration of his wife, Siju.
A source disclosed that Iluyomade received his suspension letter over the weekend. Pastor Charles Kpandei from the church’s Resurrection Parish Region 11 has been appointed as his immediate replacement.
The RCCG’s Governing Council decided to suspend Iluyomade for three months after forming a panel to investigate the allegations against him and the parish.
According to an anonymous senior pastor within the church, the suspension is partly a response to the public backlash following the opulent birthday celebration of Iluyomade’s wife, which occurred shortly after the tragic death of Herbert Wigwe, the former Chief Executive Officer of Access Bank.
Wigwe, who died in a helicopter crash in the US, was a significant benefactor to the church. Many viewed the timing of the birthday celebration as insensitive, given the close proximity to Wigwe’s death. The celebration led to criticism, suggesting that the church displayed a lack of emotional attachment to Wigwe’s passing.
In addition to his role at the City of David, Iluyomade serves as the Special Assistant to the RCCG General Overseer on Christian Social Responsibility through His Love Foundation. It remains unclear whether this responsibility has also been revoked.
National Updates reporter reported that Iluyomade’s suspension was based on two issues: an audit of the church and the pastor’s alleged resistance to being transferred from the parish. An insider, who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the matter, revealed that the Governing Council met to address these concerns. They questioned the audit results and discussed the pastor’s resistance to a transfer.
The council resolved to suspend Iluyomade for three months, during which time his subordinate will take over his duties. Upon completing his suspension, Iluyomade will not return to the City of David Parish but will instead report to the church’s headquarters.
This decision highlights the RCCG’s commitment to maintaining transparency and accountability within its leadership ranks, addressing both financial audits and compliance with organizational policies. The church aims to ensure that its leaders exemplify integrity and align with its values and mission.
