President Bola Tinubu has announced the renaming of the National Arts Theatre in Iganmu, Lagos, to the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and Creative Arts.
This decision was conveyed in a letter personally signed by Tinubu to mark Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka’s 90th birthday celebration.
“I am pleased to join admirers around the world in celebrating the 90th birthday of Nigeria’s iconic son and the world-renowned Professor Akinwande Oluwole Babatunde, famously known as Wole Soyinka,” Tinubu’s letter stated.
Highlighting Soyinka’s global influence as a playwright, poet, human rights activist, and more, Tinubu underscored the significance of honoring him while he continues to inspire generations.
“Professor Soyinka remains the shining light of our nation, a vocal critic of oppression and injustice globally,” Tinubu expressed, celebrating Soyinka’s indomitable spirit and enduring impact.
Tinubu also reminisced on their joint efforts during Nigeria’s struggle for democracy, praising Soyinka’s courage and influence in advocating for a fair and just society.
“On this milestone, I celebrate Professor Soyinka for his profound influence and enduring spirit, and wish him an incredibly happy 90th birthday,” Tinubu concluded.
