The Plateau Commissioner for Information and Communication, Musa Ashoms, has confirmed that approximately 200 students were trapped when a school building collapsed in Jos.
The incident occurred at Saints Academy, a secondary school in Jos, during the students’ third-term examinations.
Ashoms, who visited the scene with other commissioners, noted that the school had a total population of about 400 students. The collapsed portion of the building had been accommodating approximately half of the school’s population.
“The collapsed building has resulted in casualties, and injured students are currently being evacuated to hospitals,” Ashoms stated.
He emphasized that the exact number of casualties cannot be confirmed until the rescue operation is completed.
Emergency workers are actively engaged in rescue efforts, supported by Governor Caleb Mutfwang who has directed hospitals to prioritize saving lives without any financial burden on the affected families.
Ashoms underscored the importance of enforcing Order 003 of the state government, aimed at implementing the Greater Jos Master Plan to prevent such tragedies.
He highlighted that the collapsed school building, situated in a waterlogged area, did not adhere to construction standards.
Moving forward, the Jos Metropolitan Development Board will ensure the demolition of faulty buildings and enforce strict adherence to construction standards for all ongoing projects. NAN
