The Ogun State Government has intensified efforts to commence international passenger operations at the Gateway International Airport, with plans to begin with Hajj flights to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The move, according to government officials, is part of a broader strategy to expand aviation infrastructure and stimulate economic growth in Ogun State and the wider South-West region.
Governor Dapo Abiodun has initiated high-level engagements with key federal agencies responsible for aviation regulation and border control to ensure the airport meets all requirements for international operations.
As part of the process, the governor mandated the Consultant on Aviation Matters and Accountable Manager of Gateway International Airport, Capt. Dapo Olumide, to lead consultations with relevant agencies including the Nigeria Immigration Service, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, and the Nigeria Customs Service.
Discussions are focused on strengthening security architecture, deploying specialised personnel, and ensuring full regulatory compliance under the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority.
When operational, the airport is expected to support pilgrimage travel, enhance cargo movement, and improve regional connectivity, while complementing existing aviation facilities in the South-West and positioning Ogun State as a growing hub for aviation, trade, and logistics.
