The Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority (OYRLEA) has imposed fines on three environmental offenders for improper refuse disposal and other environmental infractions, warning of tougher enforcement of environmental laws across the state.

The penalties were imposed on Monday, October 20, 2026, during a sitting of the Environmental Protection Tribunal presided over by Mr Kunle Abimbola, Esq.

At the proceedings, the Tribunal fixed penalties at ₦30,000 for Count One, ₦20,000 for Count Two and ₦10,000 for Count Three, in accordance with existing environmental laws.

While the first defendant pleaded guilty to Count One but denied Counts Two and Three, the second pleaded guilty to all counts. The third defendant also admitted Count One but pleaded not guilty to Counts Two and Three.

The development coincided with the commencement of full-scale operations at OYRLEA’s new permanent headquarters in Agodi, Ibadan.

Speaking after the proceedings, the Authority’s Chairperson, Hon. Justice Aderonke Adekemi Aderemi (Rtd.), charged officers and staff to intensify enforcement activities and ensure strict compliance with environmental regulations.

She declared that the Authority would extend its operations beyond Ibadan to all local government areas and geopolitical zones of Oyo State.

According to her, markets, roads, public spaces and other public facilities would receive increased attention as the Authority steps up efforts to promote cleanliness, safety and order.

“Now is the time to be on top of our game. We must embrace enforcement with renewed vigour and ensure compliance in every part of this state,” she said.

Justice Aderemi also disclosed that regular training and retraining would be introduced to strengthen personnel’s efficiency, discipline and professionalism.
