The Nigeria Customs Service’s Joint Border Patrol Team, Sector 2, announced the seizure of contraband items worth N1.12 billion across six states.
The seizures include 1,410 liters of premium motor spirit (PMS) valued at N30.4 million, intercepted within one week.
The team’s coordinator, Mohammad Shuaibu, briefed journalists at the Customs Training College in Ikeja on Friday. He mentioned that the seized items were intercepted within their jurisdiction, with some captured at the creeks.
In addition to the PMS, the team confiscated various contraband items and arrested five suspects in connection with these seizures.
Shuaibu detailed the items seized are 4,051 bags of foreign parboiled rice, 3,751 jerry cans of PMS, 425 cartons of frozen poultry products, 912 pieces of used tires, 30 sacks of cannabis sativa, 30 units of cars used for conveyance, Seven units of imported (tokunbo) cars and Four units of motorcycles
The team also recovered a total of N11.5 million in revenue through the issuance of debit notes on improperly imported vehicles and other goods.
Additionally, the team intercepted 30 illegal immigrants.
“With the Nigeria Immigration Service as a critical component of the joint border patrol team, we intercepted 30 illegal immigrants suspected of violating immigration laws and handed them over to the NIS for further investigation and prosecution,” Shuaibu disclosed.
He warned smugglers to desist from their activities, emphasizing that smuggling undermines national security and negatively impacts the economy by depleting the nation’s revenue base through evasion of duties and taxes.
